My role at RateCity

At RateCity, I worked as a UX/UI designer, where I led design strategy, defined the product’s direction, and coordinated a team of two designers. My responsibilities included overseeing the creation of responsive designs across all financial verticals. I prioritised enhancements to comparison tables, filters, financial calculators, and landing pages, resulting in improved conversion rates, as well as better site and app accessibility and usability.

I utilised qualitative and quantitative UX methodologies to validate my design process and better understand user needs. Employing design thinking methods, I tailored research approaches such as user interviews, competitor analysis, persona building, prototype feedback, design reviews, and continuous in-person usability testing. My focus was on applying UX and UI design principles to ensure a user-centered design approach, where user needs always came first.

A new design system

I implemented a new and enhanced design system and style guide, aiming to establish a uniform design language across the website, app, and social media platforms. This design system was crafted with a focus on consistency, accessibility, and usability.

Key features of the design system included:

Clean and minimal interfaces: I designed interfaces that were clean, minimal, and adaptable to different screen sizes, enhancing the overall user experience.

Component library: I created a comprehensive library of reusable components that facilitated efficient and consistent design across our web and app platforms.

Accessible designs: I ensured that all components met high accessibility standards by using high-contrast colors, readable fonts, and ensuring responsiveness across all devices.

Comparison tables and filters

A financial comparison site's bread and butter is its tables and filtering capabilities. Throughout my time at RateCity, one of the longest and continuous projects I worked on was the design for comparison tables, filters, and featured products across the website and app. These components spanned various financial verticals, including home loans, personal and car loans, credit cards, banking, insurance, superannuation, mobile phones, and NBN.

Design Process:

User research: Conducted extensive user research to understand how users interact with comparison tables and filters. This involved user interviews, surveys, and usability testing sessions.

Wireframing and prototyping: Created wireframes and prototypes to visualise the layout and functionality of the comparison tables and filters.

Visual design: Applied the new design system to create visually appealing and consistent comparison tables and filters. Emphasis was placed on readability, ease of use, and accessibility.

Interaction design: Designed intuitive interactions for filtering options, making it easy for users to narrow down their choices and find the best financial products quickly.

Usability testing: Conducted usability testing to ensure that the comparison tables and filters met user needs and provided a seamless experience. Feedback from these sessions was used to make continuous improvements.

By focusing on these areas, I was able to enhance the usability and effectiveness of RateCity's comparison tools, helping users make informed financial decisions more easily.

I developed responsive components and restructured pages to improve the user experience. By integrating rate tables and calculators within content sections, we saw a positive impact on SEO.
